Telomeres and Weight Loss (and Surgery?)

Overweight?  There may be good news…bariatric surgery may be able to help your telomeres according to a preliminary study presented at Obesity Week 2013.

“This is the first study to demonstrate that surgical weight loss leads to decreased aging by increasing telomere length,” said lead author John M. Morton, MD, MPH, director of bariatric surgery, Stanford University in Stanford, Calif.” – GastroEndoNews.com

Dr. Morton goes on to say:

“If indeed the weight loss does have a positive effect on preservation of DNA and how it functions, that is a remarkable finding.”

The question is, what does this mean for those who do not need this surgery?  Are their telomeres destined to be shorter than those who need bariatric surgery?  While I highly doubt it, hopefully there will be more studies done on this fascinating find.
